Old is New Again
The Lindale Mill, located outside of Rome, Floyd County, Georgia, is a testament to what is old is new again. The textile mill dates back to 1896 when Massachusetts Cotton Mills, of Lowell, Mass., opened a new mill in Lindale, Georgia.
In 1903, the mill produced one-seventh of all textiles in Georgia and employed 1,393 people, including many children. In 1926, it was sold to the Pepperell Manufacturing Company, and the surrounding community and school were renamed Pepperell.
Today, the mill serves as a venue for weddings and film productions. According to the Lindale Mill History Facebook page, it also hosts car shows and other recreational events.
The photos show unused areas of the property that are slowly being cleaned up. During my second visit to Lindale Mill, I noticed trash bags on the second floor. I suspect it will take many years for renovations to be completed.
Lindale Mill is a treasure trove of textures and lingering signs of its past occupancy. Be advised, visits must be arranged in advance, as the property is privately owned and is gated. No entrance is permitted without the owner's approval.
I didn’t photograph the lower floor interior and the huge outdoor courtyard. These spaces are a perfect venue for wedding ceremonies. If you're interested in the amenities Lindale Mill offers, please visit the website for more details. See the photos enlarged by clicking the images!
